Steve Wilson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather brother, and friend passed away peacefully on December 13 2023, at the age of 70. Born on December 22, 1952, in Friars Point, Mississippi, Steve’s life was a testament to love, laughter, and commitment to family.
For many years, Steve dedicated himself to a rewarding career as a pipefitter, proudly holding membership in Local 619 in Vicksburg and Local 597 in Chicago, where he traversed the United States, embracing the travels that each job brought. His unwavering work ethic continued until his well-deserved retirement at the age of 62, after which he embraced life’s adventures with open arms and an eager heart.
Steve's profound belief in the power of education was a cornerstone of his life. He wholeheartedly encouraged his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to seize educational opportunities, fervently believing that knowledge is the path to success. This conviction resonated deeply within his family, as evidenced by their tireless pursuit of learning and empowerment.
Beyond his dedication to work and education, Steve was a fun-loving spirit whose vibrance filled the room. His playful nature shone through in his love for westerns and action movies, often enjoyed with family during trips to the theater. He cherished playing dominoes and spades, reveling in the camaraderie and joyful competition they brought. Steve was never one to shy away from adventure; he often drove hundreds of miles across the country to celebrate milestones with his loved ones—birthdays, graduations, Thanksgivings, Christmases, or just for the simple pleasure of togetherness. This love for travel culminated in a family dream trip to Hawaii in June 2023, where they celebrated his milestone 70th birthday in paradise.
Steve had a passion for music and dance, embodying joy with every step. He could be found dancing to the soulful rhythms of old-school legends like the O’Jays, The Temptations, James Brown, and the Gap Band, as well as new favorites that brought a smile to his face. His zest for life was infectious, rendering him a constant source of light and inspiration for those around him.
Steve’s proudest accomplishments were his deep love for his family—his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings. He was a model of good health, encouraging those he cared about to live life to the fullest—eschewing alcohol and tobacco, embracing exercise, and maintaining an active lifestyle. He tirelessly took on the role of caretaker within the family, coordinating monthly lunches for his older siblings and weekly gatherings for other relatives, always ensuring that everyone felt connected and cherished. His thoughtful calls on holidays and birthdays were his way of expressing love for each family member, reminding them of their importance in his life.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife, Bobbie Hicks-Wilson; his loving children, Candi Blue of Chicago, IL; Donnell Wilson (Leslie) of Kannapolis, NC; Sacoby Wilson (Natasha) of Bowie, MD; Marnique Wilson of Madison, MS; Chauncey “D” Wilson (Leslie) of Atoka, TN; Chealcey Wilson (Kevin) of Covington, LA; and Tockcey-DeShun Smith of Atlanta, GA. He leaves behind a legacy through his treasures, including thirteen grandchildren: Candis, Trinity, Twila, Courtney, Antonee (Avery), Ariana, Ava, Marneicha, Keegan, Raiden (Rai), Peyton (Kai), Sheavion (Shea), Aaliyah; and five great-grandchildren: Ceriyah, CeKai, Zuri, Zyla, and Ezra. His beloved siblings, Barbara Jean Wilson-Appleby, Connie Wilson-Calvin, and Robert E. (Mary) Wilson Jr., along with a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends, will hold his cherished memory close.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sadie Mae Purnell and Robert E. Wilson, Sr., along with three sisters—Corrine Young, Robbie Mae Wilson-Harper, and Heavy Cage—and brothers Sylvester Allen and C.W. Allen (Marge). His great-granddaughter, Camari Rials, also predeceased him.
While we mourn the loss of Steve Wilson, we celebrate a life that was rich with love, laughter, and an unwavering passion for family. He will forever remain in our hearts, guiding us with the lessons he imparted and the love he shared.
