Manuel Bland, III, a beloved member of the Vicksburg community, passed away on May 22 2024, at the age of 69. Born on October 11, 1954, Manuel a man of kind heart and steadfast loyalty, known affectionately to many as “Bland.”
His career reflected his dedication to serving others; he worked as a security guard at F&G and contributed his talents as a setup man for numerous bands performing at L.D.'s and throughout the city. Manuel's work ethic and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on his coworkers and the local entertainment community.
Musically inclined, Manuel was one of the original members of the Heavenly Stars of Vicksburg, where he showcased his exceptional talent as a tenor for many years. His love for gospel quartet music was evident in his passion for old school gospel, with cherished favorites including the Canton Spirituals and The Williams Brothers.
Manuel is survived by his devoted wife, Lilly Bland; his son, Marcellus Ducan; and one sister, Ruth Bland. He also leaves behind a loving nephew, Manuel Buchanan, a brother-in-law, Richard Thomas (Thelma), and an extensive family of bonus children whom he raised: Chantell “Cupcake,” Thomas “Duke,” Walter, Chondra, Tangie, Reva, Rachael “Ray Ray,” Tanya, Richard, and Tiffany Thomas. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Marcellous, Amani, and Brooklyn, along with numerous bonus grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and other family members, including the Russell and Parson families of Vicksburg.
Manuel was preceded in death by his parents, the late Manuel and Olivia Bland, as well as two brothers, Huey and Aaron Curtis, and three sisters, Juton Tiny Miller, Bessie “Betty” James, and Joice Ann “Missy” Buchanan.
A visitation will be held on May 31, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180. The funeral service will take place the following day, June 1, 2024, with the service starting at 2:00 PM and concluding at 3:00 PM at the same location.
Manuel’s gentle spirit, deep musical roots, and the love he had for his family and friends will be missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
