Lela Lewis, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on December 8, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on July 15, 1935, Lela was a cornerstone of her family and community, known for her unwavering love and support.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Gracie Fountain and Jessie Lewis (Matthew) of Vicksburg, MS; Millie Queen (Alexander), her dedicated caregivers from Redwood, MS; and her sons Henry Lewis Jr. (Faye) of Redwood, MS, Willie Lewis (Jennifer) of Utica, MS, and Charles Lewis (Betty) of Vicksburg, MS. Lela was a proud matriarch, blessed with 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom she cherished deeply. Her family was further enriched by her special son-in-law Dennis Fountain and special son Michael Jackson, along with a host of special nieces and nephews. She shared enduring bonds with the Ragan, Lewis, Hayne, Scott, and Queen families.
Lela is preceded in death by her father Gabriel Ragan and her mother Mary Branch, as well as her beloved husband Rev. Henry Lewis Sr. She was also preceded by her daughters Patricia Smoots and Ida Wright, and her siblings: Georgia Johnson, Carrie Flowers, Elmira Kennard, Ida Fisher, Marsnee White, and Minnie Scott. Additionally, she mourned the passing of her brothers Elmore Ragan, Coleman Ragan, Melvin Ragan, and Willie Ragan, alongside her grandsons Bobby Lumpkin Jr. and Charles Lewis Jr.
The family will honor her memory with a visitation on December 20, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street in Vicksburg, MS. A Celebration of Life will be held the following day, December 21, 2024, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, commencing at 11:00 AM and concluding at 12:00 PM, located at 5760 Hwy 3 in Redwood, MS.
Lela Lewis will be remembered for her deep compassion, generous spirit, and the warmth she brought into the lives of those around her. Her legacy of love and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew her.
