Korey O'Neill Sims, Jr., a beloved son, brother, and friend, transitioned from this world on August 4, 2024, in Vicksburg, MS, leaving behind a legacy of love and joy that will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. Born on December 2, 2005, in Vicksburg, Korey Jr.'s vibrant spirit and kind heart were evident from a young age, lighting up every room he entered.
Korey Jr. was a devoted member of Mt. Pilgrim M.B. Church of Freetown in Vicksburg, where he was baptized under the loving guidance of Pastor John Williams, Sr. His commitment to his church community shone through in his active role as an usher, contributing with grace and dedication.
Korey's passion for basketball defined much of his youthful journey. He started high school at Warren Central High School, where he continue to hone his skills and love for the game. Later transferring to St. Aloysius High School, he flourished not only as a player but also as a leader. As the team captain, he earned accolades such as Most Improved Player and Most Valuable Player, and proudly represented his peers on the 2024 All-County Boys Basketball team. These proud accomplishments reflected his hard work, determination, and love for the sport.
Korey Jr. leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory forever. He is survived by his parents, Tomorries Riley and Korey Sims, Sr.; grandmothers, Shirley Riley and Pauline Gardner Sims, both of Vicksburg, MS, and Charlene Johnson of Hollandale, MS; his grandfather, Marvin Earl Johnson (Sheila) from Sarasota, FL; and his dear sisters, Tamarrian Wright, Sa’Mahira Riley, and Jer’Moriah Haggan, all of Vicksburg, MS. He also leaves behind a network of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who shared in his journey. His aunts include Jenophia Truitt, Jennifer (Shaymari) Riley of Vicksburg, MS, and Marvina Johnson and Kadesha Johnson of Sarasota, FL. His uncles are Shunta “Kendale” Riley, Johnny “Bubba” (Dawn) Smith, Kenneth Sims, Sr., and Derrick (Ebony) Gardner, all of Vicksburg, MS. Additionally, Korey Jr. was a beloved uncle to his niece, Londyn Butler of Vicksburg, MS, and his nephew, Cecil Johnson of Sarasota, FL. He shared countless moments with his cousins, including Mercedes Dee, Shaymari Coleman, and many others from near and far, each having their heart touched by his laughter and warmth.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, Annie Mae Riley and A.C. Hollingsworth, and Savory Eaines; paternal great-grandparents, Johnny and Ruth Sims Sr., Wesley and Dolly Smith Sr.; his grandparents, Johnny Sims Jr. and Marilyn Sims; and uncles Derrick Fitzgerald Sims, Stanford “Kidd” Sims, and Curby Truitt. Their spirits will surely welcome him with open arms as he joins them in eternal peace.
A visitation in honor of Korey Jr. will be held on August 24, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 8:15 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, MS. His funeral service will follow on August 25, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Ardis Williams City Auditorium, 901 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, MS.
Korey O'Neill Sims, Jr. will be deeply missed by all who were touched by his joyful presence and loving spirit. May his memory be a blessing, inspiring all who knew him to embrace life, love unconditionally, and pursue their passions.
