It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harvey James Young, Sr., who left this world on October 11, 2024, at the age of 73. Born on November 16, 1950, Harvey was a steadfast presence in the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. His life was characterized an unwavering commitment to his family, a fruitful career, and a devotion to personal growth.
Harvey's career spanned many years, during which he proudly contributed to Bell’s Ice Company and later worked at Comfort Suites until health challenges became overwhelming. He took immense pride in his work, and his colleagues will remember him for his strong work ethic and kind spirit.
Education was important to Harvey, who attended Rosa A. Temple High School, laying the foundation for a life filled with learning and self-improvement. He was particularly passionate about carpentry, where his hands skillfully fashioned beautiful creations, reflecting his creative spirit and dedication.
More than any of his accomplishments, Harvey was a man deeply rooted in his faith and recovery. He consistently shared his testimony, inspiring those around him, and was eagerly anticipating celebrating ten years of sobriety by attending 100% Recovery N/A meetings. His journey towards healing and wholeness was a testament to his strength and resilience, touching the lives of many.
Harvey leaves to cherish his memories his beloved children: Harvey Young, Jr. of Milwaukee, WI; Creatunjia (Lynette) Henderson of Detroit, MI; Tamela Evans Terre of Haute, IN; Howard (Brittany) Smith of Terre Haute, IN; Quincy (Lona) Young of Lakeland, FL; Kersey Young; Vincent Douglass; Ja’Harvey Caples; and K’Qeariston Caples. He is also survived by his brother, Ernest (Diane) Young; sister, Katherine Young; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends including Jennifer (Timothy) Sanford, Christina Johnson, and Donald Dillon. This rich tapestry of relationships embodies the love and legacy that Harvey cultivated throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Yvette Young, whose memory remains etched in the hearts of those who knew them together. His parents, Albert and Hilda Young, along with his siblings: Mamie S. Young, Willie Bell Young Adams, Albert Ann Hebron, Lois Marie Anderson, William H. Young, Albert Young, Jr., and Halvern Young have welcomed him home.
The celebration of Harvey's life will take place with a visitation on October 18, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center in Vicksburg, MS. A heartfelt celebration will follow on October 19, 2024, beginning at 2:30 PM at Bethlehem MB Church, also in Vicksburg.
As we gather to remember Harvey Young, let us celebrate a life well-lived—one filled with love, faith, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to family. His kindness, strength, and spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him dearly.
