Ernest Carl Jackson, a beloved father, brother, and friend, was called home on January 19, 2024, in Vicksburg, MS. He was born on December 29, 1954, and throughout his life, he exemplified the values of hard work, faith, and community. Ernest's journey began at Temple High School, where he laid the foundation for a life to service. After graduating, he proudly joined the United States Army, embracing the call to serve his country. Following his military service, Ernest embarked on a diverse career path. He worked for the Corp of Engineers at the Matt Sinking Unit in Vicksburg, and the Mare Island Naval Base in Vallejo, California. As a truck driver in Winter Haven, Florida, and later back in Vicksburg with the Warren County Department, Ernest approached each job with a sense of duty and dedication that was truly commendable.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ernest had a rich and fulfilling personal life. He was deeply passionate about studying the word of God, a pursuit that brought him peace and purpose. Ernest was also an avid gardener, taking great joy in nurturing plants and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. A health advocate at heart, he carefully examined food labels and ingredients, embodying his commitment to well-being and fitness through walking and exercising.
Ernest leaves to cherish his memories one son, Ernest Gabriel Jackson, of Rolling Fork, MS. He is survived by six sisters: Jennie Robinson, Linda Jackson, Tangie Bailey (Ronnie), Rose Cosey (Indianapolis, Indiana), Angela Jackson (Spring, Texas), and Betty Shelton (Dallas, Texas); and four brothers, George Jackson and William Jackson of Vicksburg, Earl (Rena) Jackson (Indianapolis, Indiana), and Charles Jackson (Tampa, Florida). He will be dearly missed by his two aunts, Lodis (Bell) Smith and Ethel Jackson, and one uncle, Leonard Jackson, all of Vicksburg. Additionally, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones, including his cherished Morning Star Church family.
His absence will be profoundly felt by his childhood friends—Henry Banks, Willie Reed, Earl Liggins, Terry Wash, Charles Price, Thomas T. Washington, Michael Dottery—as well as the Warren County road department crew, and the extended families of Shelton, Carpenter, Huell, Dottorey, and Anderson.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Frances Jackson, Jr.; his grandparents, Johnnie and Leola Jackson, Sr., and James and Alberta Cain; and two sisters, Joyce Haskett and Cynthia Jackson. He was also preceded by three brothers: infant brother Johnnie Jackson III, Robert Jackson, and Donald Jackson.
A visitation will be held in his honor on January 26, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, MS. A graveside service will follow on January 28, 2024, at 2:00 PM, at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 326 Lovers Lane, Vicksburg, MS.
